We received a Northland Regional Council Environmental Grant of $500 towards our bird garden. Here is a photo of Renee and Cole being presented with our award, by Councillor Peter Jensen and Ms Susan Botting at the presentation ceremony. There is also a photo of some of our keen gardeners on planting day.

Our Native Bird Garden

The native birds in Whangarei have been starving, as there is a shortage of the food they like to eat.  We have decided to create a native bird garden in the front of the school. We interviewed Mr McKernan and did some research.
We have been awarded some money from the Northland Regional Council and the NZ Glass Foundation, so that we can buy the right sort of trees to plant in our garden. We want to attract tui and kereru to our school, as well as all sorts of other native birds.
Here are some photos of the area before we started. Keep viewing our blog for updates as we start planting.

Waste Not Want Not

We brought along our tin cans from our recycling bins. We designed some amazing desk tidy containers and, using all sorts of materials, we decorated them.

What do you think of them?

We have written some wonderful thank you letters to Anna Murphy from “Zero waste,” who gave us the great ideas.

We will be starting our papermaking process next, reusing envelopes that would have been thrown away.

Cross Country Training!

This is all of us at the end of one of our cross country practices. We are trying to build up our stamina for the big race on Tuesday, August 18th. What an amazing bunch of athletes!

Emergency systems

We had an exciting morning last Friday when the emergency services arrived at school. We were in the middle of a discussion about the emergency systems we use in New Zealand when, all of a sudden, the fire alarm started ringing and we all had to evacuate the classroom and line up on the front courts. Mrs D. called the roll, to make sure we were all safe.

What an amazing coincidence!

This is a movie of the action.
